Ten Common List Mistakes
posted in List Building, Email Marketing |
Every time you send something out, you can get results, as long as you don’t fall victim to the common list mistakes too many people seem to make (even the gurus):
- Crap content.
This can ONLY result in people unsubscribing - NOT what you want! - Sending out TOO often / or not often enough.
Set up a schedule of WHEN you are going to send your newsletter – say every second Tuesday morning – and DO IT. On your schedule, PLAN the topics you’ll talk about in each newsletter. - Field merges that don’t work i.e. {$user.name_f}, you’ll be kicking yourself…
This looks totally bad… and says that you are NOT the expert you claim to be! - Sending incorrect links, and then re-sending the correct ones.
How annoying and unprofessional is that? - Sending the SAME email more than once.
Even if you add a “You may have gotten this email from me before, but just in case, I wanted to make SURE that you received it this time” message…
Really? Get organized, or I’ll unsubscribe because you are annoying me! - Using tracking links that don’t mean anything by themselves and don’t provide any hint of what they point to (my current gripe with newsletters) – e.g.
linktoautoresponder.com/cgi-bin/click?kjhgsdfhnyhgrv
I much prefer the
linktomysite.com/recommends/productname
This helps ME (the reader) work out if I’ve already seen it before… so I won’t waste any more of my precious TIME! - Linking directly to merchant pages (i.e. ClickBank affiliate products).
Linking to a REVIEW on YOUR site is a better idea. That encourages people to browse further on your site if they decide they don’t like the product reviewed. - Being TOO cryptic with the message.
Usually those really SHORT ones that you just HAVE to click through to find out what it’s about… NOT!But the other cryptic/confusing sort is one I just received… packed full of links, different messages, products, repetition…. what the???
- Not following correct SPAM legislation regulations.
This WILL get you into lots of trouble… and suggest DOUBLE opt-in will also help avoid all sorts of hassles as well! - NOT building, and using, a list in the first place!
Say no more…!
