The Price Is Right!
I subscribe to receive Terry Dean’s blog posts, delivered direct to my email, and I can always rely on some interesting reading and some very timely reminders.
Terry’s post today about selling high ticket items for big profits reminded me of some extremely valuable advice I received many years ago.
For over 12 years I have been concentrating on web design work for small businesses, and for many years, priced my services accordingly. I had it in mind that they didn’t need to pay thousands to get a “basic” web site done that would work for them. And rightly so… some of the prices that were being charged were astronomical (when you KNEW what work was actually involved!)
So for a while, I charged clients around $500 a year for a complete small business web site… obviously if they wanted something with more detail - i.e. a shopping cart chock full of products, I charged a little more.
And then I got that piece of advice I mentioned earlier… which basically suggested I was undercharging for my services… It took someone else to make me realise I was worth a lot more!
Once my price went up… the number of clients dropped a little, but the QUALITY of the client improved (in line with what Terry said). Generally speaking, the clients who paid less, created MORE work for me and had more “problems” that needed to be dealt with. And I think several were much less appreciative of the bargain they actually got!
Today, Terry’s post is a timely reminder for me because I am, right now, contemplating the pricing structure for my new info-product which is soon to hit the streets.
My thinking was that a low entry level price might be the way to go. And while there are some advantages of selling a product at $7.00 (seems to be all the rage) you’ve got to sell a LOT of them at that price to make any money from the front end.
But now? Am I undervaluing myself again? Thanks Terry… I thought I had it covered, but I need to do some more serious thinking by the looks of things.
Whatever the price point I set, I have also been looking very closely at including a lot of very relevant back-end income generating opportunities to make up for any front end shortfall.
So it was also very interesting that, in the last 24 hours, I heard about the launch of a new site called “Hidden Sales Secrets” which is encouraging people to look more closely at their back-end sales mechanisms, because that’s where the real money can be made. It’s interesting because that IS one of the issues I discuss (in depth) in my own product, so it’s good to know I’m on the right track with my thinking
Speaking of high price tags… There’s a new “step by step” membership site coming out soon which the gurus will apparently be extremely unhappy about, because it exposes them for the launch hopping, money sucking people they supposedly are! Strong words indeed, and I nodded a knowledgeable “uhuh” a lot (not that I have EVER met any of these gurus personally) when I first read about it… eagerly awaiting more information about the launch.
When the pre-launch page I’ve peeked at said even more of the same… I thought these guys were well on the right track! And then… Whammo! This is a very detailed mentoring package and is to cost a pretty penny or more, every month. OK - it might be jam-packed with all sorts of stuff… with one-on-one help to implement everything…
And really… Which person chasing the Internet “lifestyle” dream has that sort of cash?
The vast majority of the people trying to break into business on the ‘net do NOT have the financial resources to commit to hundreds of dollars month after month.
My budget has never been able to extend to any of these high priced packages and/or seminars about Internet Marketing… I must be far too cautious with my money… So if you are like me, you should be very interested in my new product when I get it to launch - just a few weeks away now.
I’ve decided on a name - Your Info Product Blueprint - and am currently finalising the member area and all the pdf and audio files… and I expect the final price for my 100% complete, no BS, step-by-step guide to be well under $100 if not even closer to $50.
Your Info Product Blueprint shows you EXACTLY what you have to do to create, market, sell and support your own information product, and start to build your own online BUSINESS, without worrying about all the confusing snake oil.
I’m no slouch when it comes to the ‘net (a web designer since 1995) but getting all of this information together has been a very steep learning curve for me… I’m totally AMAZED at how much information you do need to find out to get everything in place! It’s no wonder SO-O-O many people fail to get past first base online!
Stay tuned…
