Looking For Reasons To Fail?

posted in Essentials |

You do not have to go far to find reasons why people fail online, yet despite that, there are still a large chunk of people who keep doing the wrong things… things that practically guarantee their online failure.

So… to Detlev Reimer’s recently published list of 10 reasons why people are failing online I would like to add a couple of my own… and not in any particular order…

People are in a rush, and like to take shortcuts. Unfortunately they will often jump in without doing enough research - without checking out the product, the market, the technical and administrative abilities THEY might need to look after things. Go, Grab, Install… It doesn’t work? Then grab something else and try that out… Rinse and repeat until it does work.

This hopping from one “scheme” to another and not focusing on the completion of one project at a time is very common among newcomers to marketing on the Internet.

It’s as if they are looking for a magic pill to swallow that will just “work” for them! Sorry - there really isn’t one. Everything requires “work” so do your research into each idea properly at the start to avoid wasted opportunities later on.

One of the comments on Detlev’s post pointed out the “flood” of information available to people - usually through a swag of different email offers - that cause you to get distracted and lose focus. You have to make a conscious decision to follow through on your initial plans. Keep asking can this “distraction” add to my main plan? Give it a minute or two of your time to consider… and if it can’t - don’t stay there!!!!

And if you do your research at the start, and come up with a solid plan, you’ll find it easier to stay focussed!

Another thing that is responsible for a lot of online failure, is that many people haven’t got properly developed “B.S.” meters… and believe a much of the hype and promises made in various sales letters. Again… IF you’ve done your research, you’ll quickly recognise the snake oil peddlers and stay away from them.

Look… put yourself in a “real-world” situation for just a minute or two…

Imagine you are investigating purchasing a franchise for a well known brand, and you’re opening a new store in an untested location. It’s going to cost you at least $50k and about eight weeks to fit out. There’s rent, employees, council charges, insurances, etc etc etc!

I’ll bet you’d do some VERY serious investigation/research BEFORE you got going on that!

So just because the large upfront (and ongoing) costs are NOT there on the ‘net, does that mean you should give a new online business idea any less consideration?

No. It shouldn’t!

And Detlev’s list is an excellent starting point to see if you’ve got what it takes!

Could use all the info I can get. Im a newbie looking for all the answers before I get started. I am the type that hates half information…I need to know what Im doing before i get started..so Im perplexed when I hear, “just get started” !! I will, but need to know a little more first..any thoughts or ideas about that? I get mixed input about it.

Marlene… I DETEST these people who say “just get started”. It ends up with hordes of people who make half-assed attempts at doing something, which inevitably results in failure!

Instead of people taking due diligence with what they are doing, and making sure all the necessary steps have been taken… you end up with people who, while they may have “taken action”, end up with:
    1. poor research targeting the wrong niche
    2. incomplete or inaccurate product
    3. ineffective traffic generation
    4. poor conversion
    5. even worse follow up with leads and customers
    etc…

As well as being sidetracked by the latest whiz bang gimmick instead of concentrating on getting the basics right.

All in all… an almost total waste of time, effort and money!

So maybe that’s a post I should get back to work on - it’s something I have been trying to do, which keeps getting delayed… and that’s going back to the basics and starting from there!

    Cheers
    Stephen
