eBay… Strrriiiiiike Two?

Oh I wouldn’t want a business on eBay for quids! The changes are coming so think and fast it’s almost impossible to keep up.

After last month’s digital delivery fiasco, it seems that now eBay Australia wants to get into the action by announcing they will ONLY accept CASH or PAYPAL after June 17, 2008.

So with direct deposits, money orders and personal cheques no longer viable payment options from June 17 on, it seems eBay will be scoring some beaut extra fees/income from each and every PayPal transaction! Remember? They OWN PayPal LOL!

While cash - in the form of COD I presume - is still going to be accepted… just ask yourself how much it COSTS for each COD transaction at Australia Post, and whether people are going to be prepared to pay the extra cost attached to that… And what about overseas COD’s?

Unlikely on both counts!

While eBay defends this decision as improving the protection for buyers (provided by PayPal’s Buyer Protection insurance program) and it will also result in increased confidence in using eBay.

Better wait for the jury on that!

    UPDATE - June 12 2008

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has ruled that the proposed eBay changes would have “the effect of substantially lessening competition in the market in which PayPal operates” and likely result in “reduced choice for consumers, higher transactions costs and reduced innovation in online payment systems.”

So for now, eBay’s request has been denied and PayPal will not be the only option for Australian eBay users.

    Expect eBay to appeal…

As was to be expected, eBay Australia has announced that it will challenge the ACCC ruling and anticipates that things will be resolved by mid July.

eBay have now said that the new PayPal or COD payment options come into effect on Tuesday 15 July.

We can’t wait to see what happens next…
