Up Close And Personal. How Close is Too Close?
It makes sense to reveal a little bit of your “personality” to your visitors and subscribers - unless you are a total raving lunatic - because that helps differentiate you from other marketers. But how up close and personal should you get? How much of your personal life should you reveal through the web? And when does too much get in the way of your marketing?
A few examples are best to illustrate…
A recent product launch I was viewing had the product creator doing the now standard introductory videos discussing the product. One video in particular actually “featured” his young son, having just woken up from a nap, so daddy was showing him what he was doing…
Now that might have been nice for the first 30 seconds or so, but when it went on for the duration of the 20+minute video… I just wonder how much time he thinks his customers have to waste?
And then there are the emails I get from people telling me all about the latest “whatever” they have just been to - a conference or family event etc - and now they’re sitting in the airport waiting for a plane, so they thought they’d send a quick email letting me know what they’ve been up to - along with some half-baked, supposedly-relevant product link to have a look at.
Seems just like an excuse to send a promotional email to me… but then again, I am rather a cynical old bugger at times!
Speaking of profanities… there are a few marketers who like to take these to the limit at times on their blogs. Does the extreme use of swearing help them establish a reputation as a person to be “trusted”?
Marketing is all about building relationships… which is why you have to reveal a little bit of your personality to demonstrate you are human too…
But when have your favourite marketers gone a little too far? Let me know!
