The more I look into video, the more excited I get at the possibilities, and I’ve got two examples to talk about today.

The first was my participation (as a viewer) in the “Internet Marketing After Party” that was run by Rick Butts, well known Internet Marketer and Motivational Speaker. He was using a live video feed through a remarkable FREE service call ustreamTV…

It were amazing!!! Over 2.5 hours of pure entertainment chock full of information. You can view the shorter recorded version by going to Rick’s post about the “Internet Marketing After Party“! The video and sound quality were absolutely amazing for a live stream! While you are there, see if you can twist Rick’s arm to make this a regular event!

Next mp3 ringtones creator info personal phone remember ringtones free lg ringtones 24 ctu ringtones free crazy frog ringtones download kyocera ringtones download free ringtones samsung sprint pcs ringtones free sprint real ringtones download free cricket ringtones free real music ringtones for nextel cingular free music ringtones gold mp3 ringtones cell free phone ringtones verizon cingular free music ringtones polyphonic ringtones for sony ericsson 2366i nokia ringtones cell free phone ringtones verizon wireless hotlink maxis caller ringtones cingular free ringtones up - and this one starts next Monday - April 21!

You just have to be a fly on the wall and look over Derek Gehl’s shoulder while he demonstrates how to build a profitable web site from scratch - i.e. no product, no niche, no research, no nothin’ - in just four days!

Will he succeed? Well.. I suppose he better as he’s demonstrating his Be-Biz software, so it’ll be a hoot if it didn’t work! LOL

But software or not - you’ll learn a lot about the finer points of product and web site development by simply securing your free seat to this live training event.

Ahh… you’ve gotta love all this great video stuff!

If you’re not doing it yourself (yet) then you know exactly what I’m missing out on too!

I promise… I’ll get tuit as soon as I can.

Just a few days ago (April 15) Alexa made an announcement that their “new” ranking system was now available.

If you don’t already know, for years Alexa has had a toolbar that users can download onto their web browser. As these users surfed the web, the toolbar sent data back to Alexa to help determine the “popularity” of web sites across the globe.

The big problem with the Alexa measure of popularity is that it is based on a certain demographic - i.e. a more techno-savvy, maybe even slightly geeky type of internet user - or someone who understands how to install and use the tools that come with the toolbar.

In other words - NOT a true representation of the “average” Internet user…

Still… the Alexa ranking could give web site owners some “idea” of how popular their site was compared to others.

And if you didn’t have many people with the toolbar visit your site, you just weren’t “popular”.

But now Alexa is

(aggregating) data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.

About time

I might start paying a little more attention to those rankings now…

You see, I’ve got a Google alert set up to tell me whenever sploggers steal any of my content and put it on their site.

And this one made me chuckle…

No offence intended to anyone here - this is meant to be funny!!!

Well partly. You’d think that these auto-blogging scrapers would at least be able to acknowledge the author of the item properly!

Ahh… but maybe it’s part of their plan. Can “god” be sued for copyright breach?

Oh I wouldn’t want a business on eBay for quids! The changes are coming so think and fast it’s almost impossible to keep up.

After last month’s digital delivery fiasco, it seems that now eBay Australia wants to get into the action by announcing they will ONLY accept CASH or PAYPAL after June 17, 2008.

So with direct deposits, money orders and personal cheques no longer viable payment options from June 17 on, it seems eBay will be scoring some beaut extra fees/income from each and every PayPal transaction! Remember? They OWN PayPal LOL!

While cash - in the form of COD I presume - is still going to be accepted… just ask yourself how much it COSTS for each COD transaction at Australia Post, and whether people are going to be prepared to pay the extra cost attached to that… And what about overseas COD’s?

Unlikely on both counts!

While eBay defends this decision as improving the protection for buyers (provided by PayPal’s Buyer Protection insurance program) and it will also result in increased confidence in using eBay.

Better wait for the jury on that!

While I’m wrapped with using WordPress as a publishing platform, I DO want to take things a step or two further, and right now, I want to include a membership section on a web site. That means HIDING my WordPress pages and posts from the public, and showing them only to paying “members”.

You’d think that would be a very simple thing to do with WordPress - just grab another plugin, and voila! Instant membership section.

Not so… but please - anyone - correct me if I am wrong!

Oh… and a warning! This is a long post and does get a tad technical at times

So… off to Google to do the search for “WordPress membership plugin” and I discover a minefield of information - as expected.

What wasn’t expected was the repeated references to a plugin that used to be available free, which was upgraded to commercial, and now seems to be not supported at all. This one seemed to have all the answers, including integration with PayPal. And it appeared everywhere! But sadly seems to be available no more.

Most of the other WordPress “membership” plugins I found seem to:
1. use WordPress user registration routines
2. limit visibility of posts to signed in members
and that’s about all… and they require you to “do” something to posts that you don’t want shown…

I also found some very expensive “membership” software that could “plug-in” to PayPal and WordPress… but way out of my budget.

Oh well… back to the drawing board, and deciding WHAT I actually wanted to “do” with the “members” section. So I got to thinking… do I really NEED to have people “log in” to WordPress just so they could read the posts in the first place?

Most likely not!

How about setting up the member area in a different folder which is protected by .htaccess security instead?

That process is CERTAINLY a lot simpler to do and there are HEAPS of free or low cost user management programs available which can manage the registration of users, and look after the .htacess and .htpasswd files needed to protect the member’s folder.

So, assuming the members folder on your web site is called “members” - e.g. yourdomain.com/members/ - here’s the process:

install the .htaccess user management script of your choice, and point it to the /members/ folder to do it’s stuff! It should generate all the necessary files (.htacess and .htpasswd) in that folder.

Don’t forget to register yourself with a username and password so you can try out the member login system later on.

I have tested the free Locked Area cgi script on a new site, and it was pretty simple to install and configure (do READ and follow the instructions), and so far it works perfectly, so I am happy to suggest that as a free, and relatively hassle-free, option you can use.

It includes sending double opt-in, notification emails to new members - something that’s almost essential today - and allows you to edit the various templates used.

If there is ONE warning I must leave you with… only edit the template and config files from within the admin section. Don’t try to do them locally and FTP them… it doesn’t want to play properly if you do that.

I had practically no problems trying to use Locked Area so I could write this process and review. It is a fine, free option to set up a secure member’s area!

However, it will NOT be the program I end up using in the end, and that’s because as my hosting provider has some special “stuff” that does “membership” and lots more (auto-responder, the PayPal integration etc) which I will be using my the final membership product.

AND… it’s all included with great hosting for under $20 a month!

The key thing to whatever script you use with the process described on this page is to make sure that it works on .htaccess files - and not php authentication which could interfere with WordPress. That’s why I chose a cgi-script.

So… once you’ve installed and configured your user management script, then…

Install WordPress to operate in it’s OWN directory on your site/sub domain - suggest using wp as the name of that directory - i.e. yourdomain.com/wp/

From within WordPress admin - Options/General - your Blog Address or URL should point to your members folder - i.e. yourdomain.com/members/

Your /members/ folder needs to have these two files in it:
- the .htacess file (created by Locked Area in step 1) and
- the index.php file to talk to WordPress

COPY index.php over from the /wp/ folder to the /members/ - you WILL need to use an FTP program to do this.

Now - in that index.php file is a line:
require(’./wp-blog-header.php’);
CHANGE that line to point to your wp folder. It should read
require(’../wp/wp-blog-header.php’);
where the /wp/ bit refers to the directory in step one above.

go to Options/Permalinks and Update Permalinks to make the necessary WordPress additions to the .htaccess file in the /members/ directory

And that’s it.

Time to test it out!

If you try to log in to the member’s directory, you should get the standard pop-up login box asking for username and password.

Once that’s entered, you should see a normal WordPress site with your “member only” content.

If you see only errors, check the “require” path in the /members/index.php file! If necessary, change it to the full server path for your web server - i.e.
/home/yourusername/public_html/wp/wp-blog-header.php
and see if that fixes it!

Another good thing about this is that your Member RSS Feed is STILL publicly available - NO login is required to receive it. So, depending on whether you have selected to publish the summary or full text of your Syndication Feeds (from within the WordPress Admin Options/Reading section)

I’d suggest you select the summary RSS feed so that the full article is ONLY available to people who click through to the site, which then forces them to log-in and keeps ‘em honest! And those members who do cancel, cannot keep getting your good stuff for nothing!

Oh… to add PayPal into the mix - from your “sales page” which is promoting your membership… using the encrypted button format, send people to PayPal to make the payment, and then RETURN them to the User Registration url for your Locked Area installation.

Sidebar: While you CAN send members email from with Locked Area admin, it would be better if you could ALSO tie in an auto-responder service into the signup sequence (which is what my hosting provider also includes in the $20 a month package!).

Wanna see it in action?

Go here:
http://members.onlinemarketingfundamentals.com/

You’ll see the (very) draft version of a brand new membership site I am working on.

I actually ALSO put the .htacess file (with ONLY the WP stuff in it) and index.php - this time changing it to
require(’./wp/wp-blog-header.php’);
- into the root directory, so the home page of my “member” directory can be viewed by the public.

You can see what’s there, and even carry out a search… you just can’t click on any of the links to the posts without being a registered member.

By the way…. it’s not a bad way of letting people “preview” a membership site created with WordsPress either

IF you ALSO want to allow your “members” to “do” things within WordPress itself? Then they have access to the “normal” register for WordPress link from a page INSIDE the restricted area… and there (maybe) is where you might use those other WordPress “membership” plugins.

Oh… I almost forgot - I added another line to my /members/.htaccess file:
ErrorDocument 401 /401.html

What THIS line does (depending on the web browser software) is send failed login attempts to a special reminder screen. It’s a great way to use the server’s error checking mechanism to look for any authentication errors, and makes life a little easier for your members who can’t remember their stuff! Here’s the URL to see the page in question (and deliberately NOT clickable for SEO reasons):
http://members.onlinemarketingfundamentals.com/401.html

So that’s it - please let me know your thoughts on this by using the comment form below.

Have you developed a workable comment policy for your blog-based web site? While it doesn’t need to be published for all to see, it does help if you have a set of guidelines you can follow to help decide which comments to publish, and which Akismet comments to de-spam.

For starters, all comments to your blog should be approved before publication. That means as soon as someone makes a comment, they’ll see the “Your comment is awaiting moderation” message.

That means you have to allocate a set time each day to check and approve any comments that are pending.

Which Comments Get The Nod?

Ask yourself two questions:

does the comment ADD anything to the item under discussion

are any links provided places you really want to link to - and that means VISIT the links and have a quick look

If they pass that simple test… approve them.

But what if they don’t use their “real” name?

You know… in the part of the comment that links to their site i.e. use a key word instead? Are these people only looking for some SEO advantage from making a comment? With most blogs using a “no-follow” tag, they probably won’t get any. However they MAY attract more interest from your visitors if the words used are relevant.

Again - ask yourself the same questions above… plus another one.

Did they include their real name anywhere in the comment - i.e. at the end? If they want to identify themselves personally, then you might want to publish their comment if it meets the first two criteria.

If they want to remain anonymous, then maybe you shouldn’t approve it.

Should You Publish Negative Comments?

And if so, how should you reply to them?

There’s a “yes” and “no” answer there eh?

You’ll certainly NEVER please everybody, so a negative comment is to be expected every now and then.

While your first reaction might be “what’s this tosser saying… get off” and delete their comment, or even publish it and write a scathing reply… realise that MAYBE there might be something wrong with what you said.

How you respond and deal with that is a good measure of your credibility and can boost that IF you deal with negative comments constructively.

Quite often a simple “thank for for that” or “point noted” is the best way to do things… certainly do not get on any high horses and start shafting the commenter (not matter how much you may be tempted). That just doesn’t look good to your “normal” visitors.

What about Akismet?

As far as the comments and trackbacks captured by Akismet are concerned, before you are tempted to approve any, apply the same tests, but remember there’s probably a good reason why Akismet captured them in the first place.

I have had some legitimate comments get caught by Akismet, so you should check for these too.

Akismet will also catch a lot of trackbacks from known “scraper” blogs - these are blogs which automatically grab portions of your content from RSS feeds and build thousands of pages. While you can’t “do” anything about the incoming link, you certainly DON’T want to approve the link back to them from your site!

Put two VERY well known Internet Marketing heavyweights together, mix in with an absolute killer of a domain name, discuss the one totally ESSENTIAL thing that absolutely EVERYONE needs to know (particularly newbies) to succeed online, and offer it for FREE?

What do you get?

Well… at first glance it seems to be what thousands of people are looking to answer all their list building questions. (Honestly, my first reaction was that it was gonna absolutely kill the info product I was working on… and I can’t reproduce here the four letter word I used at the time!!!)

It’s one of those squeeze pages I just HAD to optin to, so I could see what THIS was all about!!!

And you’ll have the same reaction too if you are even vaguely interested in building your list “correctly”!

That Is… Until You Get Inside…

And this is what REALLY ticks me off about this sort of thing…

These heavyweights have got everything “right” - they have the name, the reputation, the killer domain name, the technology… etc etc

And yet the blasted product is INCOMPLETE and UNPROFESSIONAL!

Sure… the video on the home page is pretty cool and full of promise… the pdf you get after opting in is like-wise…

But the “quickstart” page is (currently) a collection of videos on how to:

buy a domain name

get a hosting account

set up your DNS

setting up your auto responder

get an HTML editor

getting an FTP client

Now this is all useful stuff for newbies no doubt - except for the vital thing…

This is supposed to be all about LIST BUILDING!

Not one mention about THAT on the quickstart page, and honestly, I’d want to know a bit more about the whole MECHANICS of how list building works (from the viewpoint of these “experts”) BEFORE I went ahead and made ANY purchases of domain names, hosting, autoresponders etc etc etc.

The sequence presented by these “experts” totally sucks and does NOTHING to suggest to newbies the RIGHT way/process of doing things!

Can It Get Any Worse?

And then I’m directed to their “blog”…

WTF? A stock standard WordPress install? NO work done to it AT ALL - no fancy theme - no SEO modifications - even the default WP links… and they haven’t even bothered to change the default “About” page!

Come on guys…

You Have GOT To Be Kidding Me!!!

This is supposedly all about (to use your phrase) “Every List Building Trick Know To Man!” (sic) and yet you lead with these crappy and totally unprofessional examples?

This now doubt will be a product a lot of people will want to promote because of the “potential” it offers (I believe there IS an affiliate program ‘cos I found a signup form at Google).

Well let’s just say that ANYONE who promotes this product to their list with an affiliate link included - while the product is in such a shabby, incomplete state of affairs - well, they have absolutely NO regard to what is good for their subscribers!

Sure… there are “warnings” that the site is “new”… that they are “building” it and will have HEAPS of stuff added to it over the next few days, weeks, months etc…

But right now, there is nothing useful at all there!

This is a classic example for all those evangelists out there who say “Take Action”… “Do Something” etc… who keep saying it “doesn’t matter” if the product is incomplete, or not perfect… just “get it out there”…

A classic example of why you DON’T do that because you treat your market like crap if you do!

And if this is a good example of how to treat any existing subscribers that you sent to that page…. hmmm.

Oh hang on… maybe the whole thing is simply an excellent example of a listbuilding trick/squeeze page that works really well… so there IS something positive you can take out of this!

Sorry… Rant now TOTALLY over… If you’ve got any comments or thoughts on this type of behaviour, then I strongly encourage you to include them below!

Thanks
Stephen

P.S. I’m NOT going to tell you the “to die-for” domain name, but there are enough clues given above so you should be able to work it out!

P.P.S. Oh… don’t try to Google their “every trick” phrase included above… it doesn’t appear in Google - yet.

P.P.S. And if you have the time… please check out my new (but incomplete) site OnLine Marketing Fundamentals. While I’m no IM bigwig, I’ve been in the teaching and web design fields long enough to know a few tricks of my own

It’s quite amazing what some people think they can get away with when they market to their subscribers! I wonder what email marketing is coming to???

This is what I got a couple of days ago from someone who should know better!

Subject: this is a rant, and it’s about you stephen … yeah, you.

Hello again Stephen,

That’s right, this email is a rant … and it’s about you.

My part in this relationship is simple … I am supposed to find the good stuff, and then share it with you.

I’ve been doing that …

Then, it’s time for you to do your part in this relationship … trust me, and go check out the good stuff I’m telling you about.

The problem is, you’re not doing it… and it’s starting to suck

He then went on to say…

So, I’m drawing a link in the sand …

This email is a test.

It’s going to determine which side of the line in the sand you’re on …

There are two links in this email, one that will take you to Jeff’s page, and another at the very bottom …

That other one is a remove link …

Please choose one.

There’s no point in reading what I write if you aren’t going to take any action on it …

OK… I’d already been to visit Jeff Walker’s great training, so there was no need to click “his” link to prove anything. So that really only leaves me with one option! LOL

Trouble is, I wasn’t quick enough and got the follow up to the rant… which is even more priceless!

Oh… the underlined bits are MINE!

Subject: a half-hearted apology … the rant about stephen, yeah you.

Hello again Stephen,

First, let me start off my saying …

HALLELUJAH!

You’re alive, you’ve got some fire in your belly, and I certainly got a rise out of you.
(well only now - I was only going to unsubscribe… but your reply really needs to be shared for people to learn from)

And, that’s why this is a “half-hearted” apology, and not a full one …
(actually, the word “sorry” is not used in this email anywhere!)

I’ll admit it.

When I sent that last email … I was TRYING to get a rise out of you, and grab your attention …

It worked.

Mission accomplished.

My one regret about sending the “rant”, the one about you, was that I didn’t post it to to my blog …

The comments would have been spectactular!

(Hey - maybe you should’ve done that as well! The last post was way back in December so it needs a bit of a “kick-start” to bring it back to life!)

Colorful language overwhelmed my inbox, and I can not even begin to tell you how many names I was called …

But … I *LOVED* every minute of it!

?

??

???

WHAT?

At this point, you probably think I’ve gone and lost my mind …

(Please don’t “presume” anything about what I may be thinking about you after this email - you have NO idea!)

Let’s re-cap what happened …

- I sent an email rant.
- Got called every name in the book.
- Saw my unsubscribe rate rocket to 10x normal.
- Found my inbox flooded with insults.
- Got cursed out, on Easter no less.

And, loved it?

I know my enjoying that response could make me look crazy … but I promise, I’m not.

Here’s why.

As I mentioned in my “rant” … I have an obligation to you as my subscriber. And it’s an obligation that I take seriously.

My job is to find the good stuff, and then share the good stuff with you …

But, it doesn’t end there.

I feel that part of my job as someone you’ve trusted as an advisor, is to make sure that you’re acting on my advice …

And that just wasn’t happening.

If I know that I’m sending you something that has an overwhelming amount of value, and you never even see it … I feel that I’ve failed you.

(Maybe you should survey your list and find out what THEY want instead of assuming you KNOW what they want… and then you’d get better results for your efforts?)

Quite simply, I haven’t done what I promised you I’d do … and that doesn’t sit right with me.

So, that last email … the rant … it was designed to rattle your cage.

I wanted you to look for my name in the “From” field in the future, and know that when you open up emails from me, they’re going to be good …

(If I forget to unsubscribe, I’ll certainly easily identify which email to delete without reading)

They’ll have the “good stuff”. Period.

Now, here comes the half-hearted apology …

If you thought that last email was over the top, I’m man enough to accept the criticism, and even welcome it.

But, at the same time, that email was written with a clear mind, and with a specific intent …

(If your intent was to “cleanse” your list of subscribers… congratulations! You probably achieved it! However there are far better ways of doing that without p’ing off everyone in the community with your attitude!)

It wasn’t a mistake.

No one else wrote it.

No one else sent it.

It was all me.

I don’t regret sending it … so the best I can send with a clear conscience is a half-hearted apology.

(Gee… errr… thanks…)

Now, I want to respond to those nasty responses, and hopefully explain why I don’t feel bad about sending it, while attempting to clear a few things up …

To do that, I’m going to quote a reply I got.

—————————————————-
“First off! You need to quit your whining! It
must be nice to spew your venomous rant from
way up there in your Ivory Tower.

Come on! All any of you ‘gurus’ care about is
your own seven figure income, not anyone else
having any success, especially not me.”
—————————————————–

Nice one, huh?

But, I loved seeing that, because it really showed me how some of you are feeling … so, let me respond.

First off, I’m not going to apologize for having some level of success … and I hope you won’t when you’re there yourself.

I may be in the “Ivory Tower” … but let me tell you something you may not realize, or want to accept.

No one put me in that tower …

I put myself there!

(Errrrr… not quite! Your “customers” may have had a small part in it???)

I had to walk up a lot of stairs to get there, and if my level of success somehow disqualifies me as a good mentor or advisor … again, the remove link is right down there at the bottom.

I’m the owner, and run the autoresponder service that sent this message … so I know it’s there.

But, here’s why that response confused me …

Aren’t you reading this *BECAUSE* I’ve had some level of success online … and not in spite of it?

I hope, for your sake, that you’ve chosen individuals who actually know what they’re talking about …

And I hope that’s why you chose me.

Moving on …

As for, only caring about my own income … I have to wonder if that person read what I sent.

Here’s a quote directly from the “rant” email …

—————————————————–
“I’ve seen a bunch of garbage promoted this past
month … like tons and tons of it …

    And you know what?

If I didn’t care about doing my part, the part
where I said I’d find “good” stuff, I could’ve
pushed that trash myself, and and made an easy
five figures in the process …

    Plenty of other people did.”
—————————————————–

Now look, here’s some serious honesty for you …

Ready for this?

Really ready?

.

.

.

Alright, here goes …

Yes, I do care about earning a living … and passing up “easy” money isn’t easy to do.

And then, to pass it up, and feel like you did it for nothing … well, it’s no fun.

Am I looking for pity?

Absolutely not, and I’m not expecting you to pull out the world’s smallest violin and play me a tune …

I just wanted you to know where I stand.

That’s it, nothing more …

Writing has never been my strong suit, so I may have chosen the wrong words …

I’ll try to do better in the future.

Now I want to talk to you about something else that I think is a very valid point… and a point brought up in just about every single response I got.

I was asked this question …

—————————————————–
“Do you really expect me to buy a new product
every other day, or every other week?”
—————————————————–

The answer to that question is …

Heck no.

It’s a valid question, but if you asked that question I think you’re missing something …

I’m not going to insult your intelligence.

(Really? Are you going to stop now then?)

You know that these free videos, free audios, and all the other stuff typically leads into a launch …

Shocking, right?

Here’s the thing … and this is important!

When I send you a link to a free video, or report, or whatever … the content is going to solid.

Sure, the marketer that put the videos, or report, or whatever out there hopes you’ll buy something … but in order to accomplish that, they have to give you an incredible amount of value first.

Here’s what it all boils down to …

You can get great content, and learn a lot of totally useful stuff, even if you don’t buy a thing.

I personally watch hours of these videos every single week … and you know what?

I learn something … ( and I don’t buy everything )

(Note to self - send this guy an email when I launch my “customer relationship building” e-course for newbies)

That’s why you usually don’t hear about these reports and videos from me first …

I actually watch the things, before I fire you off an email to check them out for yourself.

It’s all a part of climbing those stairs … the ones leading up to my “Ivory Tower”.

And, it’s my job.

It’s my responsibility to know what I’m sending, even if that means I’m not the first person you hear about these things from …

Sometimes that makes me look like I’m “following” the crowd, but …

Think about it for a minute …

Who’s more likely to have actually reviewed the stuff they’re sending you … the person who gets it to you first? Or, the guy who gets it to you later?

Hmmmm … makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Alright … rant over.

I hope you understand what I was trying to do … and apologize if you didn’t appreciate the method.

But, I can’t apologize for my motive.

I want to help, I want you to succeed, and appreciate the trust you’ve put in me …

Thanks & Good Luck,
(name removed to protect the incompetent)

Now the really “funny” thing is… there were TWO marketers who used this technique in the past week - both promoting Jeff Walker’s PLF launch - hey Jeff - you didn’t do a cut-and-paste email like this for your affiliates to use??? Nah - didn’t think so At least the other marketer didn’t sound so much like he had his head shoved up his RSS feed!

Oh dear….

Look - I’m sorry for foisting this garbage onto you.

But I thought you really should see a perfect example of building sound, long-term relationships with your subscribers

…NOT!

In a move which shocked thousands of eBay digital goods store owners, eBay has banned goods with digital delivery methods - ebooks, music, software, web templates, domain name sales, design services, web hosting, craft epatterns etc - from being shown in their auction marketplace.

Instead, if you want to list such products, you have to now use their Classified Ads service.

Brian Burke, eBay’s Director Global Feedback Policy, cited “feedback manipulation” as the reason for this change in the official announcement on March 24:

… this creates the potential for Feedback Manipulation (both real and perceived). To preserve the integrity of the Feedback system, effective March 31 all goods that can be digitally downloaded or transferred electronically must be listed using the Classified Ads format.

Apparently eBay reckons this will be better for all concerned as their Classified ads are regarded as a “lead generation tool” so all enquiries will instead be directed to the advertiser’s web site, and NO financial or feedback transactions will go through eBay.

If sellers DO wish to use the classified service to sell their digital goods, they get lumbered into the very generic “Everything Else>Information Products” category and get charged $9.95 for a 30 day listing.

Naturally the eBay forums are abuzz with lively discussion about this!

While on one hand you’ll get rid of a lot of the digital garbage that proliferates - eg MRR packages offered for under a dollar - this move has caused huge problems for a LOT of store owners who actually run legitimate online businesses through eBay, who have sold thousands of items and have remarkable feedback comments.

Poof! Overnight their business is totally stuffed!

The “urgency” of an impending closing auction date is no longer a tactic they can use - and according to lots of store owners, it was an effective one!

Time for Plan B. Ooops…. they have no plan “B”. Another reason to not put all of your eggs into the one basket.

Look, this is probably a case of eBay reacting to a few bad apples in a very large barrel, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the “feedback” issue is a coverup for the real reason. Perhaps avoiding liability for sales of pirated software or sexually explicit material?

And drat! There’s a whole chapter gone from a new info-product I was writing that I was gonna sell on eBay when I finished it!!!

Oh… BTW… coupled with the recent news that eBay canned their affiliate program with Commission Junction, this is making for interesting times for Internet Marketers… I wonder how many will be able to keep up to date:)

The more comments I read in blog posts, forums and on various survey results, the more I notice the same stuff being said by lots of people… and basically these comments all revolve around the same issue.

Despite the plethora of information available on the Internet, people new to marketing online still cannot find the relevant information they need to move past “Go” with any confidence of success.

Sure… there’s lots of “information” but the vast majority of it is either recycled MMR stuff that should have never been published in the first place, or stuff that is so far out of date or so totally inaccurate, that it should have been retired years ago!

For some time I’ve been wanting to put together a thorough, accurate resource for newbies to the online marketing scene, and have been closely investigating lots of existing products I could put together which would help me bring this goal to reality.

Unfortunately, a lot of the tutorial type information I’ve found is either incomplete, or totally wrong. Some has been created by people who have no clue about education (I should know having been a high school teacher for 16yrs and developing resources for sale to that market for most of that time).

It’s disappointing that the quality of so much of the available material is so poor, but I’m not going to let it delay me any longer from my task.

Instead… it’s time for the “softly, softly” launch - no razamattaz at the moment - of my new web site…

OnLine Marketing Fundamentals

Where you’ll find out the basics you need to get your online biz up and running!

OK… it’s only very early days, so there are a few gaps, but if you get over there right now - perhaps sign up for the email alerts - you’ll get some good doses of highly relevant and never before published information delivered to you “hot off the presses” as I develop and fill out the content on the site!

The first thing you’ll notice is that the information is split into stuff that is useful for beginners, intermediate and advanced marketers. There’s also a “definitions” section so you can find out what all that strange terminology is really about… along with some hand-picked freebies, and quick tips that’ll be extremely useful to you!

So get on over there now, and you’ll ALSO <a
P.S. BTW… this site (the ‘Net Marketing Toolbox one) will remain as a “commentary” on various Internet Marketing issues… the new site is more geared to being a learning centre for anyone who wants to go online.

And before you say “Oh no… not another marketing site…” just have a more serious look at the information and help you’re currently being offered online and ask how useful it has been.
